John Greenleaf Whittier's The Barefoot Boy
Adapted & Illustrated by Lisa Greenleaf
Publisher: Apprentice Shop Books, LLC • www.apprenticeshopbooks.comRecall the freedom and childhood abandon of running barefoot in the summer sun!
“From the heart I give thee joy,-- I was once a barefoot boy!”
Using captivating imagery from John Greenleaf Whittier’s ancestral home, illustrator Lisa Greenleaf returns us to 19th century New England farm life in this illustrated adaptation of the poem, The Barefoot Boy.
“Cheerily, then, my little man,--Live and laugh, as boyhood can!”
Nature’s abundant beauty is evident as the pages unfold. Pluck berries from the page, marvel at the meandering streams, hear the buzzing bees and the symphony of frogs. Relive the moments that fulfill childhood dreams and imaginings.
“Still as my horizon grew -- Larger grew my riches too.”
A brief biography explains how one small book of poems by Burns inspired Whittier to write poems, prose, and essays. His poetry drew the attention of Abraham Lincoln, who once said that Whittier’s poems and songs were just what the soldiers needed to hear. As a mentor to Louisa May Alcott and friend of Holmes and Longfellow, Whittier influenced 19th century dialogue as few could.
“Blessings on thee, little man,--Barefoot boy, with cheek of tan!”
Celebrate the life and the accomplishments of a man who was loved by thousands through his devotion to poetry and a passion for equality. -
When RiversBurned: The Earth Day Story
by Linda Crotta Brennan
Illustrations and book designed by Lisa GreenleafOnce, in America ...
chemicals killed plants and animals. Cars and factories filled the air with toxic fumes. Oil spills destroyed ocean life. The sewage floating along America’s rivers was so thick it sometimes caught fire. The Earth was dying.Senator Gaylord Nelson believed that attitudes about ecology could change if people understood what was happening. He charged student organizer, Denis Hayes, with setting a plan for a national Earth Day in motion. What these men began on April 22, 1970, would change the world for the better.
